Email marketing for Shopify stores

Shopify already knows what people browsed, what they abandoned, what they bought and how much they have spent with you in total. Most stores use almost none of it. This is what to connect, what to build, and what to stop guessing about.

What Shopify actually hands your email platform

_□×

When an email tool is properly connected to Shopify, it receives far more than an address list. It gets order history, product and collection data, cart and checkout events, browsing behaviour, customer lifetime value and, if you sell subscriptions, renewal dates.

That is the raw material for every useful piece of segmentation. Buyers of one category versus another. First-time versus repeat. High spenders. People whose consumable is due for reorder. People who bought the thing you are about to discontinue.

Most stores never use it because the connection was made once, at launch, by whoever set the theme up, and nobody has looked at it since. The first thing I do in a Shopify account is check what data is genuinely flowing, not what the integration screen claims.

Install the integration, then verify it

A green tick means the apps are talking. It does not mean events are arriving. Place a test order, abandon a test cart, browse a product while logged in, then look for those three events in the email platform.

Add the on-site tracking script

Browse and cart abandonment depend on it. Without it, you will build a browse abandonment flow that triggers for almost nobody and quietly conclude that browse abandonment does not work.

Authenticate your sending domain

Send from your own domain, with the DNS records in place. Sending Shopify store email from a free mailbox address is the fastest way into a promotions tab or a spam folder.

Sort out consent at checkout and in popups

Make sure marketing consent from Shopify checkout reaches the email platform as consent, and that your popup is not creating unconsented profiles you can never legally use.

Whatever tool you are using, Klaviyo, Shopify Email, Omnisend, Mailchimp or something else, the checks are the same. I work across twelve platforms and this list has never changed.

The Shopify email flows that earn the most

Build in this order. Each one uses Shopify data the previous one has already proved is arriving.

Abandoned checkout and abandoned cart

Shopify's own abandoned checkout email is a floor, not a ceiling: one message, limited timing, no branching. A three-email series with the first inside the hour, using the actual product images and reviews, consistently outperforms it.

Welcome series with product logic

Because Shopify passes browsing and collection data, a welcome series can branch on what someone actually looked at rather than sending everyone the same five emails.

Post-purchase, timed to the product

Use the real consumption cycle. A 30-day coffee reorder nudge and a 9-month skincare nudge are the same flow with different maths.

Winback segmented by lifetime value

Shopify gives you total spend and order count. Use them: your best lapsed customers deserve a different message and no discount at all.

The full breakdown of each flow, including what to write in it, is in the ecommerce email guide.

Reporting: what to trust in Shopify and your email tool

Your email platform and Shopify will disagree about revenue, and both are right in their own terms. Email tools attribute an order to a click or open within a set window. Shopify attributes by its own last-click model. Neither is lying; they are answering different questions.

Pick one as your source of truth and stay with it. I use the email platform's attributed revenue for comparing email work over time, and Shopify's total revenue for anything about the business as a whole. Mixing them is how people convince themselves email is 40% of revenue.

Then look at the numbers that actually drive decisions: revenue per recipient, flow revenue split by individual email, list growth net of unsubscribes, and the proportion of revenue coming from repeat customers. Open rate has been unreliable since Apple's privacy changes and should never be a headline metric.

Shopify email marketing mistakes to check for today

Relying on Shopify’s built-in abandoned checkout alone

One email, fixed timing, no branching. It is a floor. A proper three-email series usually earns several times more from the same traffic.

Popups creating profiles without consent

If the popup writes to your list without a clear opt-in, you build a list you cannot legally use. Check what the form is actually setting.

Flows filtered down to almost nobody

Test filters left in place after launch are the most common reason a flow shows a healthy status and eleven sends.

Discount codes stacking with automatic discounts

Welcome and cart codes that combine with a site-wide offer will sell your product at a price you never agreed to. Set the exclusions.

Sending from a free mailbox address

Send from your own authenticated domain. This one change often does more for inbox placement than everything else on the list.

Shopify email marketing FAQs

_□×

Is Shopify Email good enough on its own?

For a small store sending simple campaigns, it is fine and it is cheap. Once you want branched flows, real segmentation and proper flow-level reporting, you will outgrow it.

Do I need Klaviyo?

No, but it is the most capable option for Shopify and the integration is the deepest. If you are already on something that works, the build order matters more than the logo.

Why is my abandoned cart flow barely sending?

Usually missing on-site tracking, a trigger set to checkout rather than cart, or a filter excluding almost everyone. This is the most common fault I find.

Should popups and Shopify checkout feed the same list?

Yes, one list, tagged by source, so you can see which capture point produces buyers rather than addresses.

Can you work in my Shopify store directly?

I mainly work in the email platform and only need read access to Shopify. How that is set up is covered on the contact page.
