Not a design mockup. A coded, tested layout with defined blocks: header, hero, product row, text block, footer. You or I drop content into it and the email looks right without rebuilding anything.
Most shops need two or three, not twenty. A campaign template, a plain text-led template for notes and updates, and a transactional-looking one for flow emails.
Most of your list reads on a phone. Single column, large tap targets, readable at arm’s length.
Logos and images with white backgrounds are the usual casualty. Fixed at build time, not discovered later.
The email still has to make sense and still has to have a clickable action.
Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook and the main mobile apps render differently. Tested in each rather than assumed.
Real text rather than words baked into images, sensible heading order, alt text, and enough contrast to read in daylight. It is better for everyone and it also stops image-heavy emails looking blank when a client blocks them.
Templates also need to survive AI preview text and summaries, which now often replace the preheader you wrote. What that changes is set out in what changed in the inbox.
